Do not expect a reply to your email
Going against most advices I give to others, my mail is forwarded to my gmail account. I like the web client, and it makes my life easier, being an Android user.
However, starting this morning, I get a not-so-nice message from Google when I try to log into my gmail account:
Sorry… account maintenance underway
This error means that we are currently working on your account. An error occurred with your mail’s storage, but your account data and messages are safe. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to log in until our team is finished.
We can’t predict exactly how long this will take, but if you are unable to access your account for over 48 hours, please contact us here (you will only receive a reply if we need additional information from you). We understand that it is critical for you to have access to your account and we will continue to work as quickly as possible to fix your account.
Note that my gmail address is never exposed to others, as I explained in Why you should register your own domain name, and people should continue more than ever to use my sam@rfc1149.net
email address. I have setup my email server so that a copy is kept locally before being sent to gmail (and later backed up), so I should not lose new incoming emails even if gmail does not come back. But I need to configure an IMAP server on my server, and I have other priorities first.
So if you are expecting an answer from me, well, too bad, that will not happen soon, and I even have a good excuse (although I would like this excuse to last as little time as possible).
Edit (2012-05-22): it has been fixed the day after, but today, ten days later, my gmail account is back “under maintenance” and I cannot access my mail, my archives or my chat anymore.
